Just beyond the tiny hamlet of Neuvy au Houlme, near Falaise, in the centre of the Basse-Normandie region, the Haras is located only a 45 minute drive from the English Channel port at Caen.
Relax and unwind in the splendid surroundings of the Haras du Gazon, a 300-acre estate of lush Normandy pastureland, enclosed by high hedges and quiet, tree lined lanes.
Once welcomed and settled into the Haras – your French home for the holiday – you can then spend whole days just roaming around the grounds and hayfields, playing tennis, kick back and go fishing for carp in the private lake or just enjoying some relaxation in the shady mature garden setting of the outdoor 20 metre pool.
The sounds of the French countryside provide the backdrop to all this – cheerful birdsong, the rustling of the poplars in a gentle breeze, the clip clop of the horses hooves as the Haras’s sleek show jumpers are taken out for exercise and then, at the end of the morning, the distant church bells tolling out for midday.
Or take the morning to shop for delicious famous Normandy cheeses and organic vegetables in the local markets and for cider at farm gates of local producers, pick up an armful of fresh bread from the ‘dépôt de pain’ at Bazoches au Houlme (4.5km, 2.8 miles) or even better bread and pastries from one of our two boulangeries at nearby pretty riverside Putanges (9.5km, 6 miles). Then return to dine alfresco in the garden – remember that nowhere in France is the habit of taking two hours for lunch more firmly rooted than in Normandy!
Come with a party of friends or family group and take over the whole place, or it’s also ideal for several families to share.
Double Espoir (Sleeps 12)
Walk through the walled garden and along the gravel path which leads to the front door of Gîte Double Espoir. A small, paved, outdoor dining setting next to the entrance extends the open-plan living, kitchen and formal dining area into the Haras gardens – ideal for entertaining.
Inside, flagstone floors and oak beams overhead are typical of the local traditional farmhouses, while plenty of comfortable armchairs and sofas bring it up to date for relaxing and watching TV (French and English satellite channels) and DVDs or browsing the floor to ceiling bookshelves, packed with interesting reading.
A well-equipped kitchen (including dishwasher and washing machine) overlooks the garden. Oil central heating and broadband internet access are provided.
There is more living space upstairs on the second floor where the bedrooms lead off the large landing. The master bedroom is a large, light room, taking pride of place at the top end of the corridor. A queen-sized sleigh bed and solid wooden furniture still leave plenty of extra room for the sofa bed and ensuite bathroom.
The two other double ensuite bedrooms both have wonderful views over the rose garden, fields and the village church in the distance, while the children’s bedroom at the other end of the hallway is also ensuite, has two bunk beds and a large single bed, plus a wall-mounted flat-screen TV and DVD.
Double Espoir offers around 250 square metres of living space in total and can accommodate six adults and five children – with an additional sofa bed for one extra in the master bedroom.
Cot and baby equipment can be provided if required.
