Local Attractions

Known as the second sunniest region of France the climate here is generally mild and agreeable and in addition to the classical summer season June and September have proved to be amongst the most wonderful months, this was the case last season (2014)
when air temperature in September was as high as 28 C and the pool still at 22 C.

Being located in the south of Deux-Sèvres, the very northern point of South-West France, there are many places of interest - the classic roman architecture present in nearly every small town, the historical past between catholics and protestants, small chateaux and
quiet waterarms - all this contributes to the authentic France feeling away from any stressful environment..
Also one of the routes of Jaques de Compostelle led through Melle, where you can also visit silver mines. Those had their importance during the reign of French kings for producing coins, the current money at those times. Many cultural events take place especially during the season (concerts, expositions, flea markets, (open air)theatre etc) We have our own Venise , called Marais Poitevin - just 10 minutes away from Niort - where you can take boat-trips and explore the many water arms rimmed by trees - leading you into a self forgotten world of silence and quietude.

Niort is a lovely small town -busy and bustling, but not yet overcrowded by tourists - with a good market on Saturday, but also Tuesday and Thursday: All the surrounding little villages have their specific market day. The closeness to the coast provides plenty of fish and lovely seafood ( oysters, mussels, prawns) at more than reasonable prices but amongst other food fantastic goat cheese from local places will tempt you to the glass of red that goes with it.

For children there are quite a few zoos (Mouton-Village, Zoo de Chizé, Zoo de la Palmyre, Valée de Singes ) to visit

The area
Close to Celles there is ' Plan de Lambon', an artificial lake (small entrance fee) as a fantastic alternative to the pool for children as it has playgroundspedalo-boats and a small sandy beach.Celles itself offers its abbey and gardens, public pool, tourist office and guided tours. bakery and a few other shops and restaurants. Sometimes horse jumping competitions take place on abbey-grounds.

Melle is bigger and provides 2 supermarkets and two discount (Aldi and Leader Price) – with Aldi being the closest and the most convenient shop to our property ( 3km) Croissants and bread at the bakers shop next to it. Marketday in Melle =Friday.
With its 3 churches, the silver-mines, a botanic fitness path leading around town, a motorcycle museum, a horse-riding centre and apart from shops and the tourist office, bakeries, banks, drug stores, post-office,doctors, restaurants are all in place.
St. Roman les Melle is only 2kms from La Baronnerie - its a tin y spot, but you can also get your bread for breakfast there, the local pub does meals at lunchtime and serves as an outlet of one of Melle's supermarkets

Local activities like fairs, car boot sales, riding, fishing in lakes and rivers, cycling, horseback-riding, playing tennis, golfing are all available and details can be obtained whilst here.
