This charming cottage is a fully renovated 100-150 year old Normandy farm cottage 5 minutes' walk from Roncey which is just 9 miles south of Coutances and 10 miles from the beaches on the west coast of the peninsula.
It has been tastefully refurbished to French requirements in an English style. Ideally located for visiting Bayeux, Mont Saint Michel, the D-day landings, and more.
Accommodation:
Kitchen and dining :The kitchen and dining area lead onto the patio and courtyard. The kitchen has all mod cons including an oven and separate hob, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge, freezer and electric log fire together with filter coffee-machine and liquidiser.
Living room: There is comfortable seating for 4/5 people. There is a book case housing various jigsaw puzzles, games and a variety of books and guide books. Beyond this room up 2 steps is a small quiet room, with round table for card games. Off this room is a wc and wash handbasin. The modern staircase leads from the living room to the first floor, There is a safety gate here.
Bedrooms : In Bedroom 1 there is a double bed with quilt and duvet, 2 circular bedside tables with lamps. Also a dressing table, small wardrobe and rack for luggage. There are 2 windows on adjacent sides, 1 overlooking the courtyard and the other overlooking the lane and the field towards the village.
Bedroom 2 : there are 3 single beds with duvets. Each has a bedside table and lamp. There is a small dressing table and a cupboard for luggage. The windows on 2 sides overlook the lane and field beyond.
Bathrooms : Large easily accessible white bath, shower cubicle, basin and wc.
Outside Amenities: The cottage has a courtyard with parking for 2 cars.
The sheltered terrace area faces south and so gets the sun all day. There is various seating for the table which has parasol umbrella.
There is an electric grill for use outside, instead of a bbq.
Not suitable for wheelchairs (gravelled courtyard).
Surrounding Area: A very quiet and peaceful spot. The village of Roncey is just a 5 minute walk, which hosts a chemist, bakery, butchers and a small supermarket and small bar / restaurant.
Enjoy the peace and quiet of the rural surroundings. There are country walks from the cottage.
Cinema at Hauteville Plage, has English speaking films, usually on a Thursday, (about 4 euros) - check first.
There's an Anglican church at Gratot - 2 mls N. of Coutances. Services normally every Sunday at 11 am.
There is tennis in the village which is a 5 minute walk, and golf at Agon-Coutanville. The beaches are safe. There is a pool in Coutances and a 'water world' in St Lo.... And of course a visit to Bayeaux to see the Tapestry and the Cathedral is a must. Granville is a working port and there plenty of seafood restaurants plus there is also a Christian Dior museum here. Mont St Michel is only about 70 miles away via the motorway.
Nearer to home you have the village of Hambye where there is a beautiful abbey situated in a most picturesque valley (just 6 miles away) plus delightful restaurant.
For beautiful sandy beaches on the west coast simply drive 30 minutes from the property and you are there.
Picturesque Coutances is 14km away. It is particularly well known for its beautiful cathedral and annual jazz festival, 'Jazz Sous les Pommiers'. Countances also has a pool.
Historic Places to Visit : Mont St Michel, Abbey de Hambye, Abbey de Lucerne and Falaise which is the birthplace of William the Conqueror. There are also beautiful towns like St Lo, Villedieu-Les-Poeles and Granville which has an abundance of fish restaurants. Plus must-see Bayeux, world-renowned for its magnificent tapestry.
Market Days : Friday, small market in Roncey and in Villedieu. Saturday market in Gavray and large market in St Lo. Thursday, market in Coutances.
There are Vide Greniers in most places throughout the year (like car boot sales). Here you can buy anything!
Normandy D-Day Landing Beaches : The Normandy coast is remembered for the D-Day landings. Whilst staying at Hunter's Lodge, you can visit this area as well as the memorial sites and excellent museums.
Restaurants : There are several inexpensive restaurants in the area, many with lunchtime menus for 13 Euros. Sometimes including wine. If not, ask for a 'pichet' - house wine. The Auberge at Nicorps is good and at Haute St Martin, just off the beach.
Shops in the Village : Boulangerie/patisserie, 2 butchers, one sells homemade pates etc and the other sells the odd bottle of wine if you've forgotten to get one! A pharmacy. There is a small bar/restaurant.
Supermarkets Close By : There are 4 in: Coutances, Gavray, Hambye, Villedieu and a hypermarket in Granville.
Travel : If you don't want to go to Caen by car why not go by train (1hr), fares reasonable and free parking at station (Coutances); also Rouen.
Motorways are good, A84 just to the south takes you into Brittany - St Malo or Mont St Michel.
World War II : Numerous stories abound. Roncey was liberated from the Nazis on July 27th and the battle for St Lo was long, (took about 6 weeks) and tedious. There are tours available for battle areas.
