Vieussan is a commune in the Hérault department in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France. At the confluence of two mountains, the town of Vieussan is 107 metres high and is situated on an oxbow in the River Orb. Resting on a hillside, surrounded by cliffs and steep rocks, Vieussan dominates a landscape of vineyards. With its pretty stone buildings, and ancient streets, this centre of the village isn’t accessible by car. However parking is conveniently available at the entrance of the village.

It is almost encircled by the river and there are various bridges pretty bridges to amble across. One of which is an attractive 3-arched bridge dating back to the 12th century, called the Pont du Diable, or devil’s bridge, apparently because it was the site of transactions between the devil and the villagers. From here the town is entered through a medieval stone arched gateway.
Roquebrun is also within easy travelling distance of Vieussan. A charming little town, also in an attractive setting on the River Orb. Once upon a time a grand castle stood poised above the village - but now all that remains is one solitary tower, La Tour de Guet Carolingienne. To enjoy Roquebrun at its best - enter via the arched bridge across the Orb, and then spend some time wandering uphill through the narrow streets of the village.

Montpellier, Nîmes, Perpignan and Carcassonne airports are all within easy reach. Via train the nearest station is at Beziers too. Trains to Paris Gare de Lyon take approximately 4 ½ hours, changing at Lyon or Montpellier. Allow a full day’s drive from France’s northern ports.
The Languedoc-Roussillon region is the hottest in mainland France. The coastline, sheltered by mountains, tends to be sunnier and warmer than the inland areas. The mountains of course tend to be cooler.
