Salernes is a charming little village situated in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southeastern France. Salernes, 22 kms west of Draguignan is located in the Haut Var, on the banks of the river Bresque, benefiting from the combination of abundant streams, fuel from the wood of surrounding forests and local clay soil.  When you visit Salernes you’ll soon discover it’s a potters’ town and has been renowned for centuries for its stunning ceramics and tiles.  Today this repertoire has extended to modern tiles, ceramics and pottery.  

When you stay in self catering accommodation in Salernes you’ll discover that it’s a peaceful destination with an abundance of winding streets, quiet squares and fountains – including the Place de la Revolution with its medieval water source.  The town village was once dominated by a medieval chateau – today when you stay in a Salernes Holiday Homeyou can see vestiges of the old chateau. There is also the 17th church of Notre Dame de Misericorde, with its single nave and two bell towers. For those adventurous enough you can even bathe in the river, at the little sandy river beach, La Muie.

Three kilometres to the north is the Chapelle Saint-Barthelemy, a 16th century hermitage on a rock overlooking the Bresque river.  There is also the stunning Cascade de Sillans, a dramatic waterfall in the river Bresque, which is popular for canyoning. Salernes also has other artisans including wrought iron fabricators and glass-blowers.   Their products can be found on market days, on Wednesday and Sunday mornings when Place de la Bresque is crammed with stalls, selling not just pottery and crafts but a wealth of fresh regional produce as well. The nearest train station is at Draguignan and TGV services to Paris Gare du Lyon station are just over 4 hours. Nice is the closet airport to Salernes where all of the low cost airlines fly to from the UK. There are also scheduled flights with Air France, British Airways and Aer Lingus throughout the year.
