A Real Gem! (Copy of review on Home Away)
La Fleurie is undoubtedly one of the best places we have stayed in and we have travelled around France for years! This is an area rich in experience, colour and culture, do not miss out on the village of Minerve, our favourite. We are a senior married couple plus our working cocker! We love the ease of driving around this area, only the occasional car, a joy! Nothing worse than visiting somewhere and ending up in a traffic jam. The Gite guide gives a list of restaurants so follow that. We tried a few and all are good. Our favourite was L'O à la Bouche at Le Somail (an hour’s lovely walk along the Canal du Midi – 25 minutes through the vineyards or a 5 minute drive from La Fleurie). Sit outside next to the canal. La Fleurie is one of two “gites" at Winemaker’s House and is totally detached from the main house, which is occupied by the owners Roger and Jane (and Lupin the dog). You can see La Fleurie layout on the website. It is well fitted out and tastefully decorated. The kitchen had everything we could wish for including a lovely welcome packet to tide us over, beers and wine included. A good Intermarche is 7 minutes by car away for general provisions and fuel. There is a small “supermarket” in the village that has fresh bread and a host of other stuff.
We only used the downstairs bedroom/bathroom. Bed was good and firm and shower was great. Two of our most important requirements. Wifi is strong and TV is “Freeview”. There is a small but well stocked library. But the real gem of La Fleurie is the walled garden that contains the pool and surrounding terrace. It is totally secluded and is a sun trap. French law requires the ability to “screen off” the pool to protect unattended children. It is easily put away out of sight in normal circumstance. Parking is in a gated courtyard so your car is also safe! Roger and Jane are excellent hosts. There when you need them and always willing to help and advise. Jane is an enthusiastic walker and knows the area well. I am sure a bribe of some sort will convince her to show you one of her favourite walks accompanied by Lupin. We needed to get a vet for our dog’s tapeworm tablet (we took Drontal) and a health check for his pet passport. We used Dr David Halloy at Clinique Vétérinaire la Mayrale, 20 minutes by car just before Narbonne. Note! Booking an appointment is best done over the phone not by email.
If anyone requires further information on Pet Passports, Roger can pass on to you my contacts.
