Our family of four (parents and two sons) from Nashville, Austin,Texas, and Denver, Colorado, USA, had the pleasure of enjoying the comfort and hospitality of Astrid's Villa Vanesse, the perfect base camp for traveling to and from the amazing sights of the departement of Vaucluse.
We found Sarrians to be a charming and friendly village. The local boulangeries and charcuteries are well-supplied and the owners will always greet you with a smile and a "Bonjour". These merchants, as well as a few nice restaurants, are a few minutes walk from the Villa.
We were blessed with 7 completely clear days- cool mornings and hot afternoons- absolute perfection. Our morning ritual was to rise early, take a brisk refreshing dip in the amazing pool, which was surrounded by lush plant life, including fragrant lavender (which bees love as well) and a very fecund loquat tree, which are found throughout the region. Unfortunately, we arrived at the tail end of the fruiting season, so not many fruit were still on the tree, but the ground was covered with over-ripe fruit. Maybe 2-4 weeks earlier would have been peak eating season. The house remained comfortable during the hot days, thanks to good cross-ventilation and thick walls.
The grounds are beautifully landscaped and inviting. The house itself was spacious, comfortable, quiet, and very private. The kitchen was very well supplied and we cooked a few dinners there as well as made use of the charcoal grill outside.
So many things to do and see. We all raved about the Sunday A.M. market in L'isle sur-la-Sorgue. The variety and quantity of fresh fruit, vegetables, breads, cheeses and other goods will leave you stunned and wondering why you don't live there. You must go. Nearby Fontaine de Vaucluse is a shady and tranquil village and the location of the source of the Sorgue River. Hiking in Les Dentelles (near Vaison La Romaine) also amazing (moderate difficulty, but worth the effort). Our kids loved the Roman aqueduct Pont Du Gard, about an hour away, near Remoulins.
We are unanimous in recommending Villa Vanesse to anyone looking for a location to relax, cook, read, swim, walk, and just enjoy this part of France.
