House with pool in Le Coudreau, Saint-Sigismond, La Vendee, Pays de la Loire, France
La Maison Rose is a beautiful, ancient property that has been tastefully renovated with modern features, whilst retaining much of it's charm and character from the past.
It is called 'The Pink House' and you will see why it's called that when you see the sun setting on the creamy exterior of the house turning it pink. Or it could refer to the abundance of roses in the garden - the deep red reflecting off the walls.
The house is big enough for 8, cosy for 2. It features thick walls and shutters that help keep the heat of day out and keep rooms cool even in the hottest weather. The house enjoys a tranquil setting with ancient sights and sounds all around. Le Coudreau is a hamlet surrounded by farmland. The scenery changes with the seasons of the year. Charolais cattle, wheat, maize and sunflowers. Wild hedgerows are laden with blackberries - pick them and snack to your heart's content. Idyllic for children.
There are many pretty small villages around (in easy bicycling distance), many on canals. Local shops and restaurants,
To make contact again with the noise of the city, try Niort or La Rochelle, which is only about 50 mins drive away and try many other towns besides, all within striking distance by car.

Local Attractions
There is a large garden with lots of shade (separate from the pool area). The local village of Le Coudreau is very quiet and perfect for young children to explore in safety. There are beautiful local walks - going down to the canal in the early evening is particularly nice.
Boat trips on canals are fun and cheap. There are places to hire boats in lots of places. Try St Sigismond, Maillezais, Arçais or Coulon.
Tennis is free at Maillezais (but not great courts).
Restaurants tend to be very French (frogs legs, snails, eels, gizzards). For the less adventurous try the pizzeria at Damvix (‘La Recré’) or ‘La Pigouille’ or ‘Le Quai Sud’ at Coulon. L’Atelier Gourmand in Coulon is very nice and there is a lovely restaurant by the boat embarkation point near the Abbey (ruins) in Maillezais.
There are lots of nice restaurants in Niort and La Rochelle and on the Isle de Re in La Flotte and Saint Martin de Re.
A nice day trip is to go up to the large forest and lake near Mervent (for young children the Park de Pierre Brune is quite fun) and then visit Vouvant where there are at least 3 cafes – one (Café Cour de Miracle) is run by an English/Australian couple.
Puy du Fou puts on wonderful spectacles but often advisable to book weeks in advance (google it from UK). Also the Abbey (ruins) at Maillezais is lovely and sometimes puts on a magical Son et Lumiere.
