Detached cottage, sleeps 7 in three bedrooms with one shower room, WiFi
La Chaumiere is detached and stands in its own large area of garden. Originally a barn, it has been renovated to a high standard with exposed stonework, oak beams, and exposed roof frames. There are two double bedrooms (with king-size beds) on the first floor, and a twin bedded room on the ground floor. Open plan lounge/living area/kitchenette, wood-burning stove, satellite TV. Utility room with washing machine.
The terraced area is very secluded and shady, and you can sit outside under the verandah and have a glass of wine, even if it’s raining, which is quite a nice experience! Walking out from the terrace leads you onto a large area of lawn exclusive to the cottage, suitable for a game of football, cricket, badminton, swing-ball etc.
Chaumiere was originally a barn. When we found it there was a tractor parked in it. Upstairs there were about 6 tons of grain drying out! The end gable had to be re-built, and I raised the roof half a metre with a car jack, (!!!) to get more headroom under the chestnut roof trusses. They were then sanded and varnished to bring out the colour. Hopefully you’ll agree the effort was worth it. The roof was then re-slated with new slates just to complete the job.
Once the roof had been sorted out attention was given to the ground floor. The earth floor had to be dug out, and replaced with a waterproof slab, insulated, and a chestnut wood floor installed, except for the tiled kitchen area.
About Ploerdut
Poulmarvezen was formerly a farmstead whose history can be traced back for centuries. The original choice of the site for a farm was on account of the natural spring that occurs here, (even to this day), and the unique Breton name Poulmarvezen reflects this (Poul, pool). The oldest of the buildings that remain was built in the late 1600's, a fortified farm with its own stone spiral staircase in a stone tower, complete with gun slit! The old prison has long since disappeared, along with the right to imprison local miscreants. The first addition to the longere (longhouse) was built in 1729, and the standard of the finely dressed stonework reveals that the farm must have prospered in the interim. Later additions were made in the early 1800's.
Rose gardens and lawns now stand where once could be heard the sounds of shire horses, cattle and people hard at work. What does remain is the cluster of time-mellowed stone buildings, still surrounded by completely unspoiled, beautiful, wooded, rolling countryside. In total we have four acres of lawns, gardens, and woodland, complete with a shady picnic area next to our own stream!
Poulmarvezen is situated at the end of a very pretty lane, and as a consequence there is no passing traffic, and therefore safe for children. The absence of noise of any description is also very noticeable. At night the sky is free from light pollution, and you can touch the Milky Way.
