- Three en-suite bedrooms (two doubles and one twin) on the first floor, accessed via the stone spiral staircase, and on the ground floor.
- Enormous (37 feet long) open plan living/dining/kitchen area.
The original massive oak beams have been left exposed, including those in the three bedrooms and the upstairs landing. The exposed timber work and stonework is shown to its best by the contrasting white walls and the rose-coloured ceramic tile floor on the ground floor, and tasteful neutral carpeting throughout the bedroom areas
The lounge area has comfortable sofas and pieces of traditional French furniture. TV, DVD, Wi-Fi. The smart kitchen area is complete with single-drainer sink unit, fridge-freezer, gas cooker, and microwave oven.
On the first floor there is a spacious double bedroom with en-suite shower room, a twin room. On a slightly higher level there is a second double bedroom and second shower room.
Very high white boarded in the corner of the dining area there is a stone receptacle, underneath an arched niche, thought to be for storing salted meat. Sadly the front section has been smashed out. During renovations the stone flag floor had to be lifted, imagine our surprise to find part of the broken stone receptacle, which had a cross carved into it. The assumption is that this was deliberately broken out during the French revolution, and hidden. It had lain there for nearly 200 years when we found it. The stone flags that had been removed were deemed to difficult to relay, they were all different sizes. Worst of all, different thicknesses, anything from 3″ to 9″, and not even flat. They are now residing in a local chateau that was being renovated at the time.-boarded ceilings with all roof timbers on show, full of character.
It has a stone spiral staircase in a tower with a "meutrier", (a gun slit), there is a massive stone Breton fireplace, (complete with wood burning stove for cosy winter lets) and many other interesting exposed stonework details.
About Ploerdut
Poulmarvezen was formerly a farmstead whose history can be traced back for centuries. The original choice of the site for a farm was on account of the natural spring that occurs here, (even to this day), and the unique Breton name Poulmarvezen reflects this (Poul, pool). The oldest of the buildings that remain was built in the late 1600's, a fortified farm with its own stone spiral staircase in a stone tower, complete with gun slit! The old prison has long since disappeared, along with the right to imprison local miscreants.
Rose gardens and lawns now stand where once could be heard the sounds of shire horses, cattle and people hard at work. What does remain is the cluster of time-mellowed stone buildings, still surrounded by completely unspoiled, beautiful, wooded, rolling countryside. In total we have four acres of lawns, gardens, and woodland, complete with a shady picnic area next to our own stream!
Poulmarvezen is situated at the end of a very pretty lane, and as a consequence there is no passing traffic, and therefore safe for children. The absence of noise of any description is also very noticeable.
