La Sérénelle is a traditional and beautfiful Maison de maître with its own private entrance and grounds. The property has been tastefully furnished and is situated in a peaceful corner of the historic village of Villars, in the heart of the Dordogne, on the edge of the The Parc Naturel Régional du Périgord. This traditional stone “Maison de maître” formed part of the 16th century beautiful Château de Puyguilhem which is situated nearby.

The house comfortably sleeps 4 people and is beautifully furnished with furniture in keeping with the property's period and region. Along with its own secure 11x5m swimming pool, in private gardens, La Sérénelle oozes charm and character.

The Perigord is easily accessible with flights direct from the UK to Limoges and Bergerac. This superb region in South West France offers you many wonderful delights. La Sérénelle is the ideal base to explore the numerous quaint villages, historic caves, outstanding French châteaux and restaurants.

The Accommodation:

This delightful French home is well furnished throughout with antiques and has the atmosphere of a “maison de famille”. Its thick stone walls help maintain a comfortable temperature inside the house.

The downstairs accommodation in this beautiful french property has very old exposed oak beams and traditional terracota tiled floors.

From the entrance hall you can access the living/dining room, which is a lovely room having an open fireplace, that provides ample comfortable seating where you can relax listening to music on the CD player, enjoy French or English (sky) television on a wide screen, watch DVDs or browse through a wide selection of reading books, together with an interesting range of guide books, which can be found on the book shelves. Wifi access available.

Another charming feature of this room are the French doors through which you have immediate access to a large sunny terrace overlooking the south facing private gardens.

The kitchen, which can be accessed from both the living/dining room and the entrance hall, is modern and well equipped with dishwasher, fridge/freezer, gas hob and electric oven, microwave, toaster and kettle and all the necessary utensils and equipment you would need to cater for up to four persons.

There is also an outside utility/boiler room which houses the washing machine and the water softner.

Upstairs there are two large comfortable bedrooms, one double and one twin bedded; with both having panoramic views of the garden and the surrounding countryside.

The bedrooms having been subject to recent renovation, creating light and airy comfortable rooms, whilst still maintaining their traditional features, and both now offering modern en-suite facilities for the 2010 season.

The alarmed 11 x 5m heated salt water swimming pool with its roman steps is located in a secluded part of the garden which has its own sunny private terrace in which to relax when not out sightseeing. On occasions the owner, Madame Goursolle may wish to use the pool, though only when guests are not in residence.

The terrace offers garden furniture and a barbecue for relaxing and dining alfresco, whilst enjoying the view of this wonderful garden and listening to the numerous song birds that inhabit the well secluded gardens.

There is parking on the road outside the property, also more sheltered parking can be found on the square more or less opposite the house.

Shopping for your first meal and breakfast for the following day can be purchased upon request by the owner and would be payable in Euros upon arrival. On request, Madame Goursolle would be happy to prepare the occasional 4 course dinner during your stay at a cost of 30 € per head including wine.

A warm welcome awaits you at La Sérénelle.

Local Attractions

Villars: boasts its own prehistoric caves ‘Grottes de Villars’ and has the largest underground network of caves in the Perigord with cave paintings and spectacular stalactite and stalagmites. There is also the fairytale ‘Château de Puyguilhem’ within a stones throw from the house which was built during the First Renaissance and is a fine example of a François 1st château, and is on a par with the many wonderful châteaux which can be found in the Loire Valley.

Brantôme: known as the Venice of the Perigord is only 12 Km away and is one of the most popular attractions in the area. It is surrounded on all sides by the River Dronne and is very popular for canoeing and provides a great deal of enjoyment for onlookers who can be seen cheering canoeists, as they try to steer their canoes over the waterfall and navigate through the chute taking them to the river at a lower level. Brantôme boasts a fine reputation for super restaurants both for the gourmand and those looking for the less expensive meal. The medieval abbey topped by an ornate 11th century belfy overshadows the village and its unlikely abbot, appointed at the age of 15, was the poet Pierre de Bourdeille (1540 – 1614), whose lovers were rumored to have included Mary Queen of Scots.

Bourdeilles: with its famous medieval castle over looking the River Dronne is approx 20 kms away and is an historic village not to be missed.

St-Jean-de-Côle: with its medieval humpbacked bridge is only 8km away and has been voted ‘the village with the most beautiful tiled roofs in France’ and also ‘one of the most beautiful villages in France’.

Périgueux: is 35 kms away and is the busy regional capital of the Périgord and is noted amongst other things for its gastronomy. There are two notable parts of the town, one medieval around the Cathedral St. Font and the other is the Gallo-Roman Quarter of Vesuna (or now known as Vésone), with its very modern and interesting museum.

There are more castles, romanesques churches and abbeys and pre-historic caves in the Dordogne than would be possible to visit in just one holiday. Madame Goursolle who speaks very good English would be happy to help plan your visits for you.

Further away, approx a 90 mins drive is the Vezere Valley, listed World Heritage by UNESCO, which offers numerous cliffs with natural cavities in which people lived thousands of years ago.

The Cave of Lascaux near Montignac should not be missed because it contains one of the most outstanding displays of prehistoric art ever found.

Les Eyzies where the “Cro-magnon” our ancestor was found has the national musuem of prehistory.

Sport: Canoeing on the River Dronne, tennis, horse riding and cycling can all be arranged locally.

Farm Visits can be arranged with tasting of local produce.

From June to September there are many cultural events arranged. These take the form of music concerts in the Romanesque Churches. There is an international festival of ‘mime’ (Mimos), which is held annually in Périgueux at the beginning of August.
