Such a pleasure to sit on the front terrace and look out over the river, at the town and across to Domme. Very serene in the evening, especially with the full moon. During the day, watching the canoes and other boats on the river and listening to the birds overhead was relaxing.
The location of the house is great. There is so much to do and places to visit in the surrounding countryside. Domme, Sarlat, and the many enchanting small towns and villages to explore are just short drives away. La Roque is a lovely village with a great restaurant - La Belle Etoile - make a reservation in advance.
The house itself is very basic and could use some updated amenities and improvements such as better beds and redone bathrooms. The kitchen was acceptable. The major issue is accessibility. It's a walk - uphill - from the place to park and because of that not really appropriate for anyone with mobility issues or for those people who can't manage luggage.
The hosts were great, very helpful and pleasant. This is a wonderful spot for those who want to visit this part of Perigord and for those looking for a place to hike, canoe, etc.
La Mirador's patios were used frequently as we enjoyed the wonderful views and various water activities. The fun was further enhanced by the 'close' visits of the hot air balloons each morning and evening, great fun!. This house serves as a great base to see many of the towns of the Dordogne Valley. La Mirador met our needs, at the same time, this house seems best suited for two adults or two adults and two children due to some space restrictions.
The property is an exquisite balance of rustic charm and practicality. Two outdoor areas for dining / relaxing; the BBQ and well-equipped kitchen are suitable for creative cooking and entertaining. Owner David is a forthcoming host, generous with useful local information to plan and facilitate the stay.
The location is central to a host of activities and must-see attractions, but a short saunter down to the river was enough to provide hours of good swimming and chill-time for the kids.
A perfect and memorable stay.
My husband and I spent 2 weeks in the Dordogne river valley and split our time at 2 HomeAway properties. Our first week was in Beynac and our second week was at Le Mirador. We highly recommend both villages but I have to say that La Roque Gageac wins out by a smidge, due to the number of restaurant options including Chez Tom which stays open outside of normal lunch and dinner hours and sells takeout pizza. The Boulangerie in Beynac is much better but no problem because Beynac is only a 5 minute drive.
It was quite rainy our first week in the Dordogne so we visited caves, castles, and Troglodyte villages. (No canoeing when the water is high!) But our second week in La Roque Gageac couldn't have been better. Warm and sunny allowing us to take full advantage of the outdoor spaces. Le Mirador was perfect for us. The views! Even better than the photos. We ate every meal on the covered patio or the roof-top. Even on a hot day, it's quite pleasant sitting under the leaf canopy of the Pergola.
The house is well equipped and we had everything we needed. We cooked a number of meals in the kitchen. David had a nice coffee/tea tray set up for our arrival and it was great to have many of the basic necessities provided - milk, sugar, olive oil, salt, pepper, paper towels, dish washing liquid, plastic wrap, toilet paper. The kitchen is not granite, glass, and stainless steel - so if that's what you're looking for you may be disappointed. But it was clean, very quaint, and had everything we needed. We also appreciated the numerous English channels on the TV (although we didn't spend much time inside) since the previous house in Beynac had no TV.
When I first learned there was no AC at Le Mirador, I was a bit worried. I'm at that phase of life where I crank up the air at night. The temperature wasn't a problem, however. The house backs up to a stone cliff and the downstairs stayed cool the entire time we were there. Outside temperatures were low 80's F. The master bedroom is on the first floor. The upstairs bedroom got a little warm at times but a fan is provided. We never had to use the fan and actually used the space heaters a few nights.
There's so much to do even within walking distance - Castelnaud and Marquessac are both very walkable. There's a really nice cliff walk above La Roque Gageac. But beware of blindly following the yellow blazes - we got hopelessly lost and David had to rescue us!
Two couples spent nearly a week at this lovely house in early October, overlooking La Roque Gageac and the Dordogne River. It was hard to pull ourselves away from the front porch and upstairs terrace -- the views really are stunning! We had the privilege to meet the owner of the house, as well as his wife and daughter - wonderful people who all made us feel very much at home. The house was clean, cozy, and met our needs quite well. Access to the upstairs bedroom is up a winding staircase, and access to the house itself is up a small footpath. This worked fine for us, but someone with mobility issues could be challenged. Do take advantage of all the area has to offer! The maps in the house with walking trails enabled us to trek for miles (kilometers!) through the beautiful countryside, and the kayak trip down the Dordogne River was a high point of our trip. Our only disappointment -- we didn't think to make an advance reservation at the La Belle Etoile Restaurant since we were there in the off-season, and unfortunately, it was full. So do book early. But we had several very enjoyable meals at La Plume D'Oie Restaurant, which was recently taken over by a very nice young couple from Northern France. All in all, a wonderful experience in La Roque Gageac! Thank you David!
We had perfect weather and a perfect stay. The photos capture the location accurately and we made plenty of use of the two terraces, dining and enjoying the picture perfect views over the river and the town. The location was a little challenging for our nonagenarian travelling companions but doable, luggage needs to be carted up the footpath to the house from the road below. The kitchen was well equipped and David our host made every effort to accommodate our needs. An exciting balloon fly by one evening that was close enough to see the faces of the occupants of the gondola made the advantages of the location very clear. Within one hour's drive there were more places to visit than we could fit in. All in all most enjoyable.
Wow, what a fantastic place. The views from the two sun terraces are fantastic. I could have sat there all day and watched the world go by. The house is really quirky - built into a rock cliff. Lots of great things to do within a 10 mile radius. I don't like going back to a place I have visited before, but I would go back to this house and the local area, plenty more to see and do. Well worth a visit. The house was immaculate and well maintained. I received excellent service from the owners, who provided us with recommendations for great restaurants and day trips. Would definitely go back.
After traveling for hours we were relieved to reach this gorgeous, and I do mean Gorgeous village. To be honest we did have trouble finding the home but a helpful tavern attendant helped us out. I would have liked a photo of the drive way and house to have a better idea of what we we looking for. ( I should mention this to the ever so helpful and humorous owner). We stayed for 3 nights in the worst weather and loved every second. Sitting on the larger than it looks balcony with the kids painting, sharing a vino watching the boats drift up and down the river as we ate our late lunch, gazing in awe at this amazing place with villages all a short 5 -10 minute drive away. I wish we had booked the place for 2 weeks to even get a semblance of what this area has on offer.
Highly recommend house and all communication with owners.
Great location, great view , clean but overpriced for the overall offering.. the place is very small, the upstair bathroom is tiny with a sink barely usable, you hit the beams with your head when using the toilet, he kitchen is dark with no window and minimally equipped with cheap equipment and silverware.the furniture comes from antique stores which may appeal to some but looks cheap and unattractive to us. The owner who lives next door was responsive when presented with issues we mentioned upon arrival.
