Restored Holiday Rental Home in Restored forge in Loire valley, Near Saumur, France
The Loire area derives much of its fame from the large number of historically interesting buildings and towns that exist in the area.
For hundreds of years it was the region where the French aristocracy would come to relax and replenish energy reserves that were generally depleted by constant warring with the English.
The Loire area has extensive forests provided excellent hunting. To guarantee their comfort while in the area, they constructed opulent chateaux many of which are still standing and can be visited today.
The river itself has now been designated a world heritage site - a testament to the importance placed on the conservation of the wetland habitat which borders the longest river in France.
Saumur is a charming town, full of elegant townhouses, and on a beautiful stretch of the River Loire. The Chateau de Saumur, the local wines, the sandy banks of the river, the equestrian traditions and historical sites, the whole of the Loire region seems to come together in Saumur. There are troglodyte dwellings in the cliffs nearby, if the chic town centre begins to seem too comfortable for you.
The famous Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Bourgueil and Saumur Champany wine growing areas are all within easy reach.
