The Accommodation:
The 875-square foot/80 metre property is a lovingly-restored winegrower's dwelling dating from 1870. A sophisticated mix of upscale contemporary and antique furnishings & decor define the open-plan living/dining/kitchen area that flows onto a private courtyard with dining table and lounge chair surrounding by a variety of flowering plants and miniature orange trees. The tranquil ensuite bedroom, which also opens onto the private courtyard, features a walk-in shower along with a dressing room with armoire and vanity table and separate water closet/toilet. There is a sofa bed in the living room of the cottage in case there is a couple with two children who want separate sleeping areas for the kids.
After a comfortable night's sleep on a quality mattress in an air-conditioned (if desired) room enjoy morning coffee and croissants in the courtyard while listening to enchanting birdsong and bubbling water fountain. From the courtyard, a private back entrance takes you to the shared heated pool, covered dining terrace and lush garden with sunning area. (The pool and garden are shared with the hosts, mid-june through mid-September. A mature couple with no children, the hosts live in an adjacent building, a converted wine barrel barn.). Paula, the owner, has 15+ years of experiencing designing and operating small luxury holiday rentals in the South of France, Paris, London, San Francisco Bay and Napa Valley, California.
A half-hour drive west from Argens brings you to the walled city of Carcassonne. Another half-hour drive from Carcassonne brings you to Castelnaudary, the birthplace of cassoulet, southern France's famed stick-to-your-ribs pork and sausage casserole. A half-hour drive east from Argens takes you to Narbonne, with its renowned medieval cathedral and a variety of shopping, restaurants and nightlife options.
In all directions you'll find villages like Minerve, with medieval churches and castle ruins, many of them relics of the bloody wars between the crusading Christians and the local followers of the Cathar religion. One of the loveliest is the secluded Fontfroide Abbey, with guided tours, lovely herbal gardens, a wine-tasting room and a highly rated restaurant.
