Had a lovely time in this simple and cosy house. Just sitting on the terrace or waking up to breathtaking views from the two windows in the master bedroom was a treat. We were there in October, so the town was on the sleepy side and we enjoyed being the only non-locals in the one open cafe. But it's also perfectly located to do varied excursions around the north of Corsica without having to go very far. (A car is a must.) Because the evenings were starting to get cold, we made a daily ritual of collecting wood (and occasionally chestnuts) for the iron stove fireplace. Would definitely go again, and would stay longer than one week next time!
We had a great week at Maison les Calanches. It is a simple, clean and comfortable home in a stunning, peaceful location. We thoroughly enjoyed Speloncato which is a delightful hilltop village. We became regulars at Bar La Voute, where we were given a warm welcome by Antoine the owner, and enjoyed our evening glass of Cap Corse. This was usually followed by a dinner cooked on the wood fired BBQ at Maison Les Calanches,as we watched the sun sink into the Mediterranean.
We made numerous daytrips to Ile Rousse, Calvi, St Florent and the stunning black pebble beach at Nonza. Invariably each afternoon found us at another stunning almost deserted beach.
I have no hesitation in recommending this house for a peaceful, laid back holiday.
We had a delightful stay at the Maison les Calanches in April 2012 and endorse all the compliments made by others earlier. As walkers, we decided not to hire a car, and thoroughly enjoyed our week without it. We came via Eurostar, TGV to Marseilles, ferry to Bastia and train to l’Ile Rousse. From there we shopped (unnecessarily we later found out, as Speloncato has a shop which sells ‘everything’) and took a taxi to the village for €40 for the four of us, with baggage. We ordered this via the Tourist Office in l’Ile Rousse, who told us we should have given 24 hrs notice, but no matter, one of the three services turned up within 5 minutes. At the end of the stay, the same service collected us at 7.30 am to take us back to l’Ile Rousse for our train to the next stay, this time for €45. There’s plenty of walking, based on the village. If you buy a Carte de Randonnée for l’Ile Rousse at 1:25000 scale you will see that Speloncato lies directly on the (web searchable) Sentier l’Ile Rousse – Corte long distance footpath. We only managed to sample this 7 day route, but the flowers and birds were enchanting.
In this globalized world it is good to know that such a place still exists. The house , its view and the village provide an awesome location. You can sleep with the windows open, fall asleep and wake up listening to the birds songs. Not to mention the wonderful sunsets which make the glass of Corsican rosé taste so romantic.
Thank you so much for letting us rent your lovely, lovely home in Spelancato. What an amazing location with the views, the birds, and the fascinating village. We had a very happy time there in all weathers. Well, almost, there was no snow. First was the cold wild wind which made collecting wood a priority on all our expeditions. We really appreciated the wood burning stove to keep us warm and help dry the towels. Then half way through we saw the other side of things with three glorious sunny days when we could sit outside, enjoying it all and feeding the red Kites from the big rock below the balcony. There were also two of the famous sunsets to admire.
We thought the house was very well equipped, cooking was easy with plenty of kitchen equipment, and lots of information about things to do and places to go. I don't think I've ever stayed anywhere with so many coat hangers which was a real bonus. We also enjoyed Tino Rossi who of course fitted nicely into the culture.
I hope all the people who come after us enjoy Maison Les Calanches as muchas we did.
We have just returned from a week in this delightful place. The house, which was comfortable and pleasant to stay in, is perched on the edge of the village with spectacular views over a wide valley towards the sea. The village (a few minutes steep walk up the hill) is charming and Madame in the general store was happy to save bread for us and was a good source of local knowledge. It takes half an hour on winding roads to get to the main coast road, but there is little temptation to leave the immediate area. The bird life is extraordinary - after a few days close-up views of red kites and other birds of prey seem almost commonplace. It's a wonderful area for 'foodies' having exceptional fresh produce and excellent restaurants. It was a delightful experience to take the short drive up to the mountain pass and, after a peaceful walk, enjoy some very high quality food in the restaurant there. Further afield, there are a wide variety of interesting places to visit. We particularly enjoyed Bastia old town (going by rail from Ponte Leccia is a scenic route and takes the strain out of parking), and there are some lovely unspoilt beaches. The owners couldn't have been more efficient and helpful, with advice about such things as car hire. You need to be reasonably fit and not too creaky to get the best out of a stay here, but this is an area that can be enjoyed on so many different levels.
Pippa was extremely helpful to us giving us advice on renting a car in Bastia. The accommodation was in a fantastic location with fabulous views across the hills and down to the sea. It was well placed from our view point up in the hills as we love walking and this is a good base for access into the hills. The house was very clean and well maintained. We could have spent much longer there , watching the sunsets and sitting on the verandah watching the kites soaring around us. Most certainly recommended and we will certainly go back again.
We stayed in the "Maison les Calanches" for a week in September of last years and had a truly incredible experience there. The house blends into the surroundings perfectly, providing privacy, comfort and serenity. The village it is part of (Speloncato) is about as authentic as possible: good eats, old stones and an atmosphere that you won't find anywhere else in the world. If you are looking to get away from it all and enjoy a simple yet comfortable lifestyle, this is definitely the place for you. While the location is quite remote, it will only take you half an hour to get to the beach, 5 mins to find basic groceries and 20 mins for an incredible winery. Our favorite moment definitely was dinner on the balcony at sunset - a quite unique experience and something we will be looking forward to when we return.
Holidays mean different things to different people but if you want peace and tranquility in a beautiful location this should be your first choice. The house sits in a wonderful location and whilst we didn't do much apart from relax we found the whole experience to be charming. The locals made us feel very welcome and we almost convinced ourselves that we were Corsican!! Try the local food and wine - the butcher with the van on Thursdays put our local butcher to shame. Thanks to Pip for allowing it to happen roll on 2011
We've just returned from a week in this property, and I highly recommend it. The owner was very friendly and helpful, both before we booked and after, as we planned our trip. The house is light and airy, well-equipped and comfortable, making it a very pleasant place to stay. The location is perfect, at the edge of a bustling village, with superlative views over the valleys to the sea. Beautiful beaches are within 30 minutes drive, and interesting coastal towns within 45 minutes. The mountains are on the doorstep, with great walking from the house or just a short drive away. We had a great holiday here, and I would happily return for another!
